Crittenton’s full continuum of behavioral health care allows each child to receive the most appropriate level of care in a safe and secure environment. Programs are designed for children ages 5 to 18 and their families.

Treatments include individual psychotherapy, group and family therapy, spiritual wellness groups, and special programs for those who are at high risk or have problems with chemical dependency, eating disorders, sexual abuse, and out-of-control aggression. Expressive therapies such as art, music, recreation exercise, and horiculture also are used to encourage individual creativity and growth as well as pre-vocational experience. Psychiatrists provide evaluation, treatment, and medication management.

As a support to residential treatment programs, middle school and high school are taught on-site in a fully accredited school operated by the Hickman Mills school district. The school’s educators are specialists; most are certified in behavior disorders.

Acute Inpatient Care
Crittenton’s psychiatric hospital offers acute inpatient care for children ages 5 through 18 who experience serious psychiatric problems.

Each patient is under the care of a psychiatrist, who works with a multidisciplinary team of behavioral health professionals. There is 24-hour supervision by a registered nurse. Together, they help youngsters understand their problems and learn to manage their emotions and behaviors. This program also teaches anger control, conflict resolution, and communication skills.

Residential Treatment
This program is designed for adolescents who need a structured stay in a safe and secure environment. This program helps adolescents develop new problem’solving skills such as anger management, problem resolution, and improved social skills. Adolescents in this program have long-standing problems that often have resisted management in other programs. Adolescents in this program participate in school sessions, individual, group,
and therapeutic recreational activities. Treatment maximizes use of social workers. Psychiatrists manage medication for psychiatric disorders. There is also 24-hour supervision by a registered nurse.

Don Bosco Counseling Center

Mental illness affects one in five adults in the United States and does not discriminate based on ethnicity, economics, age or gender. It does, however, tend to disproportionately affect people that may already be at risk due to factors such as low income, minority ethnic background and advanced age. The goal of the Don Bosco Counseling Center is to offer mental health services to everyone – regardless of their ability to pay. Through strategic alliances with other agencies, Don Bosco supports a wide range of services.

Staffed by Truman Medical Center, Don Bosco offers individual, group and family counseling for people suffering from abusive situations, substance abuse, trauma and other emotional hardships. Thanks to funding and support provided by LINC Caring Communities, social workers at four community-based sites offer a wide array of services, from behavior modification to support services to helping families find resources in the community.

Don Bosco and its network of partners ensures that everyone, with or without insurance, has access to mental health services.

The Guidance Center

Children may have difficulty succeeding in school or at home for many reasons. Depression, anxiety, Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD), Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), or other conditions can affect a child’s success. Children and families may benefit from professional guidance as they learn to understand the feelings they are experiencing, and make positive choices so that they can feel they are once again in charge of their lives.

The Guidance Center’s services for children and families includes outpatient therapy for children&families and psychiatry services, substance abuse recovery services, psychological testing and evaluations, and specialized services for youth designed to meet the needs of youth suffering from serious emotional and mental difficulties.

Because a child’s parents and family are the most important part of his or her life and have the best opportunity to influence changes, family sessions are always included in the child’s treatment plan. Changes in behavior and emotional well-being can only occur when the active involvement of parents is present. Parents are continuously kept informed of their child’s progress, and are encouraged to support their child through the treatment process.
