Literacy

All Counties: America Reads

America Reads, a national campaign that was initiated in 1997, challenges every American to help our children learn to read well and independently by the end of elementary school. Nationwide, there are approximately 1200 colleges and universities participating in the America Reads Challenge.

There are programs through both Delaware State University and University of Delaware.

All Counties: Delaware Coalition for Literacy

The purpose of the Delaware Coalition for Literacy (DCL) works with organizations and individuals to prevent and eliminate illiteracy in Delaware. This organization has information on many literacy programs throughout the state. It also runs adult education classes and helps with appropriate referrals to other areas. DCL also runs a statewide literacy helpine.

All Counties: Head Start

Head Start is a federally funded program that promotes optimal prenatal care and early development through the provision of comprehensive services, including early intervention, family literacy, and advocacy services. There are multiple sites throughout the state, contact the collaboration office to determine the appopriate site.

All Counties: Read Aloud Delaware

These statewide programs stress the importance of reading aloud. Volunteers read at child care centers, Head Start Programs, and Kindergarten classrooms, one on one to preschool children. Family Literacy Programs focus on integrating read aloud time into busy family schedules.

Kent County: MARK ( More Adult Readers in Kent County ) Program

MARK Literacy Center’s mission is to provide quality basic education to Kent County, DE adults (16+/out of school). The objective of MARK is to meet individual learning needs of adults with low-level reading, writing and math skills through one-on-one tutoring.

New Castle County: Christina EVEN START Family Literacy

The William F. Goodling Even Start Family Literacy Program is an education program for the Nation’s economically challenged families that is designed to improve the academic achievement of young children and their parents, especially in the areas of reading and language. Even Start offers promise for helping families with low literacy skills by early childhood education, adult education, and parentng activities.

New Castle County: Literacy Volunteers Serving Adults/Northern Delaware, Inc.

Free one-to-one tutoring in basic literacy and English language skills to adults over 16 in northern New Castle County. Family Literacy program provided for parent and child.
