Approximately 250,000 adults in the Kansas City metropolitan area function at the lowest literacy level and are considered functionally illiterate.
Literacy KC strives to end illiteracy in th Kansas City Metropolitan area by offering one-on-one literacy mentorships.
Students must be older than 16 years of age. They meet privately with their tutors at a mutually agreed-upon time, twice a week for 90-minute tutoring sessions.
Tutoring is provided at no charge. Students are asked at enrollment if they can pay the annual membership fee of $40. If not, the membership fee is waived.
There are 3 easy steps to enroll. First, the student calls 816-333-9332 for a confidential phone interview and to make an appointment. Next, the student visits Literacy Kansas City for an informal placement assessment. Finally, the student is assigned to a volunteer tutor, usually within 3 to 6 weeks.
