The Ma’ayan Laboratory’s Summer Research Training Program in Biomedical Big Data Science is a research intensive ten-week training program for undergraduate and master’s students interested in participating in cutting edge research projects aimed at solving data-intensive biomedical problems. Summer fellows training in the Ma’ayan Laboratory conduct faculty-mentored independent research projects in the following areas: data harmonization, machine learning, cloud computing and dynamic data visualization.
Eligibility
– U.S. citizen or U.S. permanent resident
– Undergraduate or master’s student in good academic standing
– Available to work full-time (40 hours per week) on their research project in the Ma’ayan Laboratory and take part in all program activities (e.g., weekly meetings, enrichment lectures, and the project presentation session).
Program Description and Benefits
– Direct research experience with projects aimed at solving data-intensive biomedical problems.
– Summer fellows training in the Ma’ayan Laboratory will earn a $8,000 salary for the ten-week training period. The salary is subject to all federal, state, and local taxes.
– Interaction with computational experts in the Center and members of the Ma’ayan Laboratory through weekly meetings, enrichment lectures, and a project presentation session.
– Program runs from June 5 – August 11, 2023.

The NYC Parks Summer Day Camp program offers children ages 6 to 13 a wide array of activities for a fun summer. Campers engage in sports, fitness, and outdoor adventures while taking part in many of New York City’s rich cultural and educational opportunities.

— Activities include arts and crafts, field games, sports clinics, computer classes, STEAM programs (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics), cultural and educational trips, and nature exploration with the Urban Park Rangers. *Swimming is not a guaranteed activity this year.*

Summer Rising is a free, safe, and fun academic and enrichment program for NYC students currently in grades K-8. It is run by local school leaders and trusted community-based organizations in every neighborhood. Breakfast, lunch, and a snack are served to each student.
Eligibility
— Any student who lives in NYC and is currently in grades K-8 is eligible to apply for Summer Rising 2023.
— If a student is a New York City resident but does not attend a Department of Education (DOE) public school, they should apply to a program that is in their neighborhood.
— If your child attends a public school in NYC, you can enroll him/her at any location across the city.
Activities and Dates
— Academic support, field trips, arts activities, and outdoor recreation.
— Program duration is for six weeks from 8am – 6pm.
— July 5-August 18 for K-5, and July 5-August 11 for grades 6-8.

— The Summer Rising Enrollment Portal nycenet.edu/surveys/summerrising will provide one centralized place for families to enroll in a program.

The Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP) is the nation’s largest youth employment program, connecting NYC youth between the ages of 14 and 21 with career exploration opportunities and paid work experience each summer.
Participants can earn money based on their attendance and participation. SYEP lasts six weeks from July to August. All applications to internships programs opened March 1st, 2022 and the deadline is May 6, 2022. Click on application.nycsyep.com for the application page.

— SYEP Younger Youth (14-15 years old): Activities will take place for 12.5 hours a week for six weeks in July and August and participants will receive up to a $700 stipend based on their attendance and participation.
— SYEP Older Youth (16-21 years old): Youth will earn the New York State minimum wage of $15.00 an hour and may work up to 25 hours per week for six weeks in July and August.

— Young people 14-21 can explore various career paths through various paid-summer jobs throughout NYC.

For kids 4-13, popup culinary sessions are in-person. They happen in Culikid’s partner venues across NYC. This spring’s program will feature hands-on, at-home science experiments like water-quality testing, virtual trips to the earth’s atmosphere and underwater to study the effects of climate change, and interactive group activities. The Jewish Board’s Harlem Child Development Center (HCDC) has launched a new community music-making group for families. The group is a drop-in family-centered community music therapy group focused on early childhood development. The music-making group is intended to support caregivers and their little ones together. It is also intended to maintain the whole family’s general well-being and to strengthen community ties by giving families space to meet new families they may not have known before. The program is free.

Parents and their little ones’ ages from birth to 5 years old meet virtually on Thursdays from 4-5 pm via Zoom. The Apollo Theater Academy Digital Collective (DC) provides high school students with opportunities for professional and personal development as they explore careers in Technical Theater and Virtual Performance Production.
Students will be trained and assigned to work with technical production professionals for eight (8) weeks to create virtual productions using the elements of lighting design, videography, audio engineering, production design, and live streaming. The Saltz Internship Program is an education and employment program for high school students 14 years old and up. Interns facilitate science conversations using artifacts, specimens, models, and scientific tools on mobile stations throughout the museum and at dioramas and displays in museum halls with museum visitors.
Interns receive a $900 stipend for the duration of the summer internship (July-August), Metrocards, tickets to visit special exhibitions at the museum, opportunities to attend career and college workshops, and more.

The Human Oncology & Pathogenesis Program (HOPP) at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center provides high school students with hands-on experience in laboratory techniques. Each summer, PAL provides children ages 5-13 living in communities facing high rates of poverty and crime with Summer Day Camps, free of charge.

PAL provides youth in K – 8th grade with a high-quality after-school experience based on a revolving schedule of academic enrichment (PAL Smarts), arts learning (PAL Arts), and physical education (PAL Fit). For decades, PAL’s After-school program has kept thousands of children safe and productive during high-risk after-school hours, which helps working families.
The after-school program is offered at 20 youth centers in all 5 boroughs from 3pm-6pm on school days and from 8am-6pm on school holidays.

Cyclopedia is a bicycling program led by pediatricians and public health professionals that combines physical activity with collaborative online documentation for the purpose of empowering urban adolescents to become engaged and healthy members of their communities.
Each ride has an explicitly local theme pertaining to the neighborhoods our riders live in.

Teenagers in grades 8-12 have the chance to be involved and learn about urban agriculture and the wonders of the Brooklyn Botanic Garden through the Garden Apprentice Program. The apprenticeship is a tier 9-month based program.
Activities
Working with visitors and children, growing, harvesting, and cooking fruits and vegetables, and exploring the plant collections and greenhouses at BBG. In tier 4, apprentices receive an hourly salary of $15.
Eligibility
► Tier 1 – Open to students in 8th or 9th grade. Apprentices work alongside an adult instructor and a teen Tier 4 apprentice in the Children’s Garden, helping with garden-based activities for children ages 4–10 in the BBG’s after-school and weekend programs.
► Tier 2 – Open to students in 10th grade or to those who have successfully completed Tier 1. Apprentices are placed in different mentorships in the spring, summer, and fall, such as helping our Interpretation team in the Discovery Garden or running science research projects.
► Tier 3 – Open to students in 11th grade or to those who have successfully completed Tier 2. Apprentices run the Discovery Carts—education stations that are wheeled out onto the grounds on weekends. Apprentices build public-speaking and interpretation skills as they engage with Garden visitors.
► Tier 4 – Apprentices build skills in horticulture while learning how to be environmental educators. Gardening, nature explorations, and cooking with fresh ingredients are the main activities. Note that 12th-grade students may not apply as first-time.
Schedule
► Apprentices make a nine-month commitment to GAP, from March to November.
► Typically, the work in a week is 2–3 hours in the spring and fall and 5–6 hours weekly during the summer programming.
► In the course of a year, apprentices spend approximately 50–60 hours in the Garden.

► Applications for the 2022 program year are currently closed. New applications for the 2023 program year will be available in the fall of 2022.

Concrete Safaris is an organization that prepares young people to lead healthy lives and shape their environment through outdoor education, play, exploration, and community engagement.
The Outdoor Leadership Academy is an internship program designed to train teenagers and young adults from 14 to 24 years on environmental health literacy, first aid, community engagement, and the development of soft and hard professional skills. For instance, participants will have the chance to visit companies virtually to practice interviewing, improve their resumes, and learn about the world of work.
The stipend for this internship is $700 for up to 12 hours/week of experiential education over 5 weeks.
Eligibility
► Live in New York City.
► Be at least 14 years old by the start of the program.

► Youth will be selected through the citywide SYEP lottery and will participate in virtual and in-person learning opportunities.
