Work with your counselor to open a bank account so you can set up direct deposit; navigate the IRS Get My Payment tool; manage sudden changes to your household budget or income; contact creditors, and more. — Create a budget (Manage your money and set up a spending plan)
— Establish or improve credit
— Open a safe and affordable bank account
— Contact lenders about debt, including student loans. Learn more about student loans at nyc.gov/StudentLoans
— Contact creditors about existing loans, including student loans (drafting letters to creditors to lower payments or temporarily suspend payments due to hardship)
— Develop a strategy to reduce debt or lower payments
— Separate personal and business finances
— Access emergency government resources
 
How to Book an Appointment
? The easiest way to book an appointment is by going to nyc.gov/Talkmoney. Clients will be required to create a Financial Empowerment Portal account. To book over the phone, either call 311 or to be in contact to financial counseling directly call: 212-487-4583. Each counseling session is 1 hour long. Most of the session are remote/over the phone, but there are some in-person sessions.
 
Documentation
The most important information/documents to bring is a record of monthly income and monthly expenses. Additionally, if someone is having a specific financial issue, like a difficulty with their credit card account, they can bring in the documentation for that concern.
