Child Tax Credit

The Child Tax Credit helps parents lower their tax bills per qualifying child. Parents and guardians with higher incomes may be eligible to claim a partial credit. If you are New York resident, you can receive tax credits when filing for state taxes.

• Tax credit amounts are mostly based on three factors: marital status, income, and the number of dependent children.
• Children must have a Social Security number for families to be eligible to receive the tax credit.
• Check if you qualify with an IRS Interactive Tax Assistant at irs.gov/help/ita/does-my-childdependent-qualify-for-the-child-tax-credit-or-the-credit-for-other-dependents
• You can claim the Child Tax Credit by entering your children and other dependents on Form 1040, U.S. Individual Income Tax Return, and attaching a completed Schedule 8812, Credits for Qualifying Children and Other Dependents
• For Child Tax Credit with New York State, there are income criteria. Check if you qualify at www.tax.ny.gov/pit/credits/empire_state_child_credit.htm.
